An exclusive double-bill presentation starring two of the most exciting performers in today’s classical music scene, the Brazilian soprano Angelica de la Riva and the Cuban pianist and conductor Orlando Alonso. Ms. de la Riva, praised for “a dazzling presence, a warm, agile and powerful voice, and the refinement and demeanor of a great singer,” was last year’s recipient of the prestigious Carlos Gomes Cultural Merit Award, honoring her work in promoting Brazilian classical music around the world. Her passion for the Brazilian masters and the Iberian American art song notwithstading, she has a rich opera repertoire and has performed on major concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall. Mr. Alonso has already established a flourishing international reputation through his orchestral and recital performances in North America, South America and Europe. Noted for his challenging programs, artistic maturity and versatility, his repertoire ranges from the Baroque, through the Romantics, to works by contemporary composers.
This unique program includes two Sunday-evening performances, opening with a solo piano recital by Mr. Alonso and closing with a round-trip voyage of Cuban and Brazilian songs, performed by Ms. de la Riva and Mr. Alonso. The program will feature works by European, Brazilian, and Cuban masters, including Cervantes, Villa-Lobos, Carlos Gomes, Alberto Costa, Lecuona, Anckerman, André Previn, Messiaen, Vitier, Mompou, Prokofiev, Montsalvatge, and Beethoven.
