An exclusive online interview with Cuban performance artist and dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, known for his public performances that openly criticize the Cuban government and its policies. A self-taught artist, Alcántara lives in the El Cerro neighborhood of Havana. Since 2018, he has been arrested dozens of times for his performances in violation of Decree 349, a Cuban law requiring artists to obtain advance permission for public and private exhibitions and performances. Otero Alcántara, one of the leaders of the Movimiento San Isidro, a group of Cuban artists and intellectuals who engage in civic activism, was recently hospitalized after a weeklong hunger strike.
The Havana interview was filmed online by U.S. based Cuban filmmaker Ignacio Granados, who will take questions from the audience via Zoom after the screening, with some key members of the San Isidro Movement attending, including professor and researcher Anamely Ramos González.
This presentation is part of our CreateNYC Language Access Series on Cuban History, Art, and Literature. It will be held in Spanish.
