Cuban Photography: La isla en su imagen durante dos siglos

The Cuban Cultural Center of New York celebrates its 17th annual one-day conference, this year focusing on the origins and development of Cuban photography, from colonial times to the present, including illustrated formal presentations and archival images, unveiling its evolution and its cultural, political, and social impact on the life of the Cuban nation. With the participation of leading artists and scholars from both the Island and the Cuban diaspora.

The one-day congress will highlight photography in Cuba for almost two centuries, including its historic role in the Wars of Independence, the Republican era, the Revolution, and exile. The presentations will cover the foreign lens—in both urban and rural settings—and Cuban photographers’ authentic rendering of the country’s religious syncretism, music, dance, and other cultural aspects, bringing to light the camera’s vital importance in capturing the life of everyday Cubans. A special emphasis will be placed on contemporary Cuban photography as an art, both in its vanguard role on the international scene, and as a mode of civic resistance and political protest. The event will also focus on the underestimated role of women in photography, both as subjects and as artists, and will be capped by a round table with some of the most recognized Cuban photographers today.

The roster of invited scholars, artists, critics, and curators, and of those no longer with us whose work merits recognition, is a veritable who’s who in Cuban photography, including José Antonio Navarrete, Grethel Morell Otero, Juan Antonio Molina, José Gómez de la Carrera, Guillermo Blaín, Armand, Joaquín Blez, Cirenaica Moreira, Ramiro Fernández, Geandy Pavón, Walker Evans, Susan Bank, Korda, Alexandre Arrechea, María Martínez Cañas, Margarita Aguilar, Aldeide Delgado, Sergio Florez, Gladys Triana, Juan Carlos Alom, Mayken Barreto, Gory, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Linet Sánchez, René Peña, Tico Torres, Alexis Rodriguez-Duarte, Iliana Cepero, Abelardo Morell, Marta María Pérez, Manuel Piña, Alejandro Anreus, Marius Jovaiša, Rey Parlá and many more. The congress will be dedicated, in memoriam, to Jesse Fernández (Havana, 1925-Paris, 1986), whose incursion into the most advanced facets of the photography of his day earned him a niche as one of the most important and internationally recognized Cuban photographers.

This event will be held in English and Spanish. Simultaneous translation will be provided through earphones upon request.

The conference is open to the public. Continental breakfast will be provided at 8:30 a.m., and all attendees will be invited to the closing reception.
*All CCCNY Members  and conference participants will also be served a complimentary lunch at a nearby upscale restaurant.
