The Cuban Cultural Center of New York presents its 19th annual conference, this year titled España en Cuba: Un ir y venir, celebrating the deep cultural ties between Cuba and Spain, from the arrival of Columbus on the Island in 1492 until the present, with special emphasis on the main migration waves from different parts of Spain—Asturias, Galicia, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Basque Country and Andalusia—that notably influenced the ethnic composition of the Cuban people throughout history, highlighting the most salient aspects of its cultural legacy, including its architecture, literature, gastronomy, and music. The conference will also delve into the reciprocal and relatively unknown role played by Cuba in the historical development of some regions of Spain, as well as into the contributions and influence of Spanish associations on the Island since colonial times.
The two-day flagship event will be headlined by renowned filmmakers, artists, and scholars from Spain, Latin America, and the United States, including keynote speaker José Moya, from Barnard College/Columbia University, who will provide a panoramic overview of Spanish immigration in Cuba throughout the centuries; internationally known composer Aurelio de la Vega, artists Waldo Balart and Baruj Salinas, poets Lourdes Gil and Manuel Díaz Martínez; filmmakers Manuel Rodríguez Ramos, Marié Pereira, Enrique A. Martínez, and Ángel Kataraín; literary critics María Hernández Ojeda and Elena Palmero; historians Eva Bravo-García and Germán Santana Pérez, journalist Pablo Díaz; research scholars Andrés Castellanos, Carlos Búa, and Xosé Núñez Seixas; editors Pío Serrano, Fabio Murrieta, Ileana Álvarez, and Felipe Lázaro; cultural critic Annabelle Rodríguez; authors Gleyvis Coro Montanet and Milena Rodríguez; and gourmet extraordinaire Juan Ángel Espasande. Also featured will be filmed testimonials by Manuel Moreno Fraginals and Juan Goytisolo; performances by Teresa Berganza, Ana Belén, and Lizt Alfonso Dance Cuba, including the poetry of Rafael Alberti, María Zambrano, and Federico García Lorca; and music by Ernesto Lecuona, Xavier Montsalvatge, Michel Camilo, and Julián Orbón.
The flagship event will be complemented by exclusive films and unique theatrical and musical presentations in the days following the congress, including the world premiere of the play La Indiana, by the Spanish playwright and actor Saida Santana Mahmut, a guateque of punto cubano and son with the virtuoso Cuban tres player Yuniel Jiménez and the Canarian singer Yeray Rodríguez, and a recital of legendary arias from Spanish and Cuban zarzuelas, starring soprano Virginia Herrera-Crilly and tenor César Delgado.
