The Cuban Cultural Center of New York presents its 21st consecutive annual conference, this year titled La historia del periodismo en Cuba, delving into the overarching history of journalism on the Island, from the publication of La Gaceta de La Habana in 1782 to the present, with equal emphasis on the colonial era (highlighting the pivotal roles played by Pde. Félix Varela’s El Habanero, the journalism of José Martí, and the thriving Cuban community in New York City); the Republic (emphasizing the ideological diversity of the press, its most prominent representatives, and the leading journals and newspapers, including Diario de la Marina, Prensa Libre, Hoy, El País, and others, as well as the groundbreaking role played by women journalists in the feminist and labor movements); the ongoing post-revolutionary period (Lunes de Revolución and its subsequent demise, the Cuban press in exile and the leading role played by Diario de Cuba as an online journal. The conference will also feature the role of the magazine Bohemia and its influence in the political sphere and in popular culture since its founding in 1908, the only publication to survive the Communist government’s abolition of the free press, and its transformation into a government controlled journal. Special emphasis will also be placed on the emergence of blogs and online publications during the digital era and their influence inside and outside the Island, as well as the pioneering role played by independent journalists working toward a transition to democracy in Cuba.

The two-day flagship event will include illustrated presentations, archival photographs, film clips, and engaging Q&As with the viewing audience, and will be headlined by renowned scholars, journalists, historians, and artists from Cuba, Latin America, and the United States, including keynote speakers Pde. Rolando Montes de Oca and Yoani Sánchez, and featuring Andrés Castellanos, Uva de Aragón, Dagoberto Valdés, Lisandro Pérez, Jorge Luis Arcos, Jorge Domingo Cuadriello, Salvador Salazar, Ileana Fuentes, Arístide Pumariega, Enrique del Risco, William Luis, Alejandro Ulloa, Mirta Ojito, Andrés Reynaldo, Alfredo Durán, Helga Silva, Yinett Polanco, Roberto Rodríguez Tejera, Orlando Luis Pardo Lazo, Pablo Díaz Espí, Regina Coyula, Roberto Hechavarría, Ileana Álvarez,  and others.
