Cover for Octavio Roca’s seminal book
An evening of Cuban ballet highlights, beginning with a panoramic overview of the Cuban school of ballet—inside and outside the Island—by Octavio Roca (author of the definitive book on Cuban ballet and distinguished music and dance critic for The Washington Post and other major newspapers throughout the country), placing it in the context of its prolific, albeit controversial history, its major stars, and its transcendental impact on the instruction and technical development of this art form in the United States and abroad. His seminal work, Cuban Ballet, will be on sale and autographed upon request by Mr. Roca.
Mr. Roca’s presentation will be followed by a tribute to Caridad Martínez, former principal dancer of Ballet Nacional de Cuba, in recognition of her long and distinguished career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher, highlighting her many contributions to this art form, including her present pivotal role in developing new talent at Ballet Hispanico.
The evening will be capped by Alberto Méndez’s Muñecos, interpreted by dancers from Ballet Hispanico, under the artistic direction of Caridad Martínez. This legendary piece, created especially for her and the late Fernando Johnes, is one of Ms. Martínez’s signature ballets, and will be forever associated with her exceptional artistry.
