The Cuban Cultural Center of New York caps its celebration of Women’s History Month witha keynote lecture by the distinguished Cuban musicologist Miriam Escudero, recognized worldwide as the foremost authority on Cuba’s most important baroque composers, Esteban Salas and Cayetano Pagueras.

Prof. Escudero’s illustrated lecture will be followed by a unique concert of Salas and Pagueras compositions, headlined by renowned soloists Ryland Angel, Amaya Arberas, César Delgado, Virginia Herrera-Crilly, and Jorge Ocasio; and featuring a superb ensemble of musicians with authentic period instruments and an international chorus from Cuba, Spain, México, Puerto Rico, England, and the United States. This musical gala presentation will include the world premiere of Salas’s Mass in F Major, recently unearthed by Prof. Escudero during her research travels to Santiago de Cuba.

Miriam Escudero is Director of the “Esteban Salas” Musical Heritage Department at the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana. She is also Professor at Colegio Universitario San Gerónimo, where she coordinates graduate studies in musical heritage preservation, and at The University of Arts of Cuba (ISA), where she teaches graduate-level courses. Among her recent publications Miriam Escuderois Música Sacra de Cuba, Siglo XVIII, a nine-volume annotated collection of transcriptions of works by Esteban Salas (1725-1803) and Cayetano Pagueras (Havana, fl. 1790-1814). Escudero’s research has earned her important national awards, including Premio de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba and, most recently, the 2013 Premio Academia Cubana de la Lengua. Currently, Miriam Escudero is Director and Editor of the two ongoing series: Patrimonio Musical Cubano, published by CIDMUC, and Documentos Sonoros del Patrimonio Musical Cubano. For fifteen years she was a member of the internationally known Ars Longa, an early music ensemble that pioneered historical performances in Cuba. She holds a doctoral degree from the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain, and a bachelor’s degree in musicology from the The University of Arts of Cuba (ISA).
