The CCCNY celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a belated gala concert honoring Mexico’s greatest composer, Agustín Lara, one of the most prolific and beloved songwriters of the Spanish-speaking world. Born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1897, Lara’s first trip abroad was to Havana in 1933, a visit which marked the beginning of a life-long love affair with Cuba, made manifest in some of his compositions, among them La Cumbancha and Sueño Guajiro (inspired by the Yumurí Valley), his close friendship with Ernesto Lecuona, and his professed admiration for the legendary Sindo Garay. Outside the Spanish-speaking world, his most famous songs are certainly Granada and Solamente Una Vez (You Belong to My Heart), which have been recorded by numerous international singers, among them Caruso, Mario Lanza, Luciano Pavarotti, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, and many others.
Headlining the program will be soprano Amaya Arberas and tenor César Delgado,
accompanied by pianist Juan Pablo Horcasitas.
