As part of our year-long celebration of the 500th anniversary of the City of Havana, the CCCNY closes its Spring Season with a solo exhibit by Ernesto Ferrand, one of the most sought-after Cuban artists in photography today.
Standing astride two worlds—a vanished past and a dissonant present—Ferrand’s Eppur Si Muove encompasses iconic shots of contemporary Havana, prodding beyond the image, as if searching for the soul of the city.
In his interplay of light and shadows, Ferrand turns the commonplace into an artistic vision, revealing a highly defined sense of symmetry and depth, whether in scenes of squalor or merely in the mundane, producing images equally soaked in beauty and pathos. It is a compelling aesthetics of delicacy and decay, where Havana, however stagnant, still moves.
