Two evenings of Cuban shorts by graduates of San Antonio de los Baños International Film School, in association with DocumentaMadrid under curator Guillermo G. Peydró, compiling a dazzling panorama of cinematic creativity.
Within the documentary genre, the Cuban filmography generated by the San Antonio de los Baños school has attained its own forceful personality, modulated and shaped by its intimate link to singular aspects of the Island: the bond between the human body and the land, santería, music, the sense of isolation, all translated into unexpected narrative structures circumscribed to particular spaces. It is a work that projects a tactile quality, perched on the boundary between realism and abstraction.
Most compelling, perhaps, are some of the most recent incursions into science fiction, quite detached from the more familiar Cuban cinema. These film shorts explore a futuristic Cuba, flickering in the distance, whispered under breath. Altogether, it is a body of work produced for the 21st century, while the Island ponders on its
present reality.
