A unique illustrated presentation on the United Nations’ recent issuance of six postage stamps featuring World Heritage sites in Cuba. The stamps and prestige booklets were designed by Cuban-American Sergio Baradat, Art Director for the United Nations Postal Administration, who will share with the audience how the project was developed.
Born in Havana, Baradat took great pride in creating these stamps for UNPA. His inspiration for the design of the stamp series was his early influence as a stamp collector, specifically the Cuban stamps of the early 1900’s. But as he points out, “World Heritage sites belong to all peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located. From its historical monuments, striking landscape, architectural character and art influences, Cuba is a country rich in cultural and natural heritage. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration.”
For many years, UNPA has highlighted world heritage sites recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world due to its outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention, concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.
The Cuba stamps feature the Morro Castle in Old Havana (55¢), Viñales Valley ($1.15), the Valle de los Ingenios in Trinidad (CHF 1,00), the City Hall in the Center of Cienfuegos (CHF 1,50), Camagüey (€ 0,90) and San Pedro de la Roca Castle in Santiago (€ 1,80).
Three beautifully designed prestige booklets in English, French and German accompany the stamp series. The booklets, which will be for sale at the presentation, feature colorful photographs and more detailed information about these historic sites.
Mr. Baradat will be presented by Iraida Iturralde, president of the CCCNY.
This event is part of the CreateNYC Language Access program, and it will be held in English, followed by a bilingual Q&A.
