CARMELO MESA LAGO: A LIFETIME CAREER TRIBUTE

A lifetime career tribute to Cuban economist Carmelo Mesa-Lago, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies, University of Pittsburgh, an internationally recognized scholar who is considered the dean of Cuban studies and the utmost authority on social security in Latin America, and whose contributions to the field are unequaled.

Mesa-Lago is a visiting professor, researcher, and lecturer in 40 countries, as well as author of 92 books and 300 articles published in 7 languages and 34 countries. He is past president of the Latin American Studies Association, a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance, and of the editorial boards of six academic journals. He won the International Labor Organization Prize on Decent Work with Nelson Mandela in 2007. His most recent book is Voices of Change in Cuba from the Non-State Sector (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2018).

The presentation will open with segments from the documentary Statistics and Chance, an intimate portrait by Carlos D. Díaz Montero and Elaine Acosta, focusing on his untiring search for objectivity, followed by a formal tribute by the CCCNY, and capped by a lecture by Prof. Mesa-Lago on the Cuban economy and his perspective on its future.
