A special New York City screening of Retrato de Gastón Baquero, a moving documentary by Manuel Rodríguez Ramos and Marié Pereira on the long exile in Madrid, Spain of Gastón Baquero, one of Cuba’s most outstanding poets and intellectuals. The collage of testimonials is interspersed by audio clips of Baquero’s voice reading some of his most emblematic poems, enhanced by José White‘s iconic Concert for Violin and Orchestra in F minor.
The screening will be preceded by an introduction and commentary by the directors.

The screenwriting team of Manuel Rodríguez Ramos and Marié Pereira have a long trajectory in documentary filmmaking, both individually and as co-producers. Each holds a Ph. D. from The University of Arizona, Tucson and a Master of Arts from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces. Their joint projects include, Retrato de Gastón Baquero (2014) and Las vivencias poéticas de Francisco Brines (2016), among others. Rodríguez Ramos worked as screenwriter and documentary filmmaker at Cinematografía Educativa (CINED). His filmography includes over thirty titles, among them, the critically acclaimed Lezama, inalcanzable vuelve (1989). In 2017 he published his first novel, Las estaciones del viajero (Editorial Verbum). Marié Pereira worked as theatrical consultant and assistant director for the theater troupe Buendía, as well as director in the Department of Program Series for Cuban television. Her individual filmography includes includes the outstanding documentary series El arte en Canarias (2009).
In 1999 Rodríguez Ramos and Pereira joined forces, working until 2012 in Madrid and later in the U.S. as independent screenwriters, directors, and producers of documentaries. The filmmakers also share a passion for teaching and have a long trajectory in this field. Both have continued to teach directing, screenwriting, documentary theory, and Hispanic literature at different academic institutions in the U.S.
The streaming of this film is a complementary presentation of the Cuban Cultural Center of New York’s 19th annual flagship event, this year titled España en Cuba: Un ir y venir, to be held at Barnard College on Sunday, November 15, 2020.
