In commemoration of Human Rights Day, the CCCNY offers a special screening of Muriendo a plazos, a full-length 2009 documentary on the life and death of Cuban poet, university leader and dissident Pedro Luis Boitel (1931-1972). Using the testimonials of friends and inmates who suffered tortures and denigration in the same prison where Boitel spent the last years of his life, the film reconstructs very moving aspects of his tragic ordeal, his hunger strike and the lack of humanity of those who denied him assistance during the last days of his martyrdom.
The film will be streamed one night only, and will be followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Daniel Urdanivia and producer Pedro Corzo, moderated by Perla Rozencvaig, director of our Cinema Program.
This special film presentation complements our CreateNYC Language Access Cuban History and Literature Series, and it will be held in Spanish, followed by a bilingual Q&A.
DUE TO TH COVID PANDEMIC, THIS EVENT WILL BE STREAMED THROUGH OUR VIMEO CHANNEL.

Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, Daniel Urdanivia is an actor, screenwriter and film director. The many sociopolitical challenges that he faced in Cuba from early age did not stop him from pursuing a career in acting, and after auditioning with the Escambray Theater Company, he joined Café Teatro and performed in numerous plays while touring around the island. Once in Miami, at the age of 29, he studied Computer Science and Film Production. He began, then, to direct various narrative films. One of his short projects received a special recognition at the New York International Film Festival. It was then when he realized that he wanted to make and direct documentaries, mostly to denounce the violation of human rights. He has already made six documentaries, including Boitel, muriendo a plazos. He is also one of the owners of Power Tale Productions, a company that produced high quality commercials and narrative films.
Pedro Corzo is a journalist, author and film producer. Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, he has worked for Radio Martí since 1998. He has written six books, including Confrontación y En la mira. Since 2001, he has produced several documentaries, directed by different filmmakers, among them Boitel, muriendo a plazos, Porfirio y Zapata viven and Cubanos combatiendo en África whose underlying thread is the fight against all forms of political repression. He is Vice President of the Pen Club and member of the Academy of Cuban History in Exile. He is president of the Instituto de la Memoria Histórica Cubana contra el Totalitarismo. In 2017, he was awarded the Medal of Freedom granted by the governor of the state of Florida.
This event is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York State Legislature.
