It is estimated that roughly ten percent of the Cuban population today identify themselves as Protestant, Evangelicals, or Christians. This presentation by theologian Marcos Antonio Ramos will delve into the origins and development of the different protestant denominations Cuba, most notably in the 19th century, their ties to the two wars for independence, the role of foreign missionaries, their incursion into education through the founding of schools and seminaries during the Republican era, the restrictive and discriminatory policies experienced under Communist rule after 1959, their notable resurgence in the mid 1980s, and their present standing in Cuba today.
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A through Zoom, moderated by Ricardo Gil, director of our History Program.

Marcos Antonio Ramos is a historian and theologian. He is General Editor of Herencia magazines and a Senior Research Associate at the Cuban Studies Institute. During his academic career he has taught at six universities and theological seminaries. He is the author of several books including Panorama del Protestantismo en Cuba and Protestantism and Revolution in Cuba. He is one of the authors of UNESCO’s General History of Latin America. Among his many honors and recognitions is the Papal Medal “Benemerenti” granted by Benedict XVI, as well as the National Award in Journalism in the Dominican Republic. He has researched extensively on Religion and Society in contemporary Cuba and for several years was a regular columnist for El Nuevo Herald.
