The simultaneous NYC launch of the Spanish and English editions of Karla Suárez‘s Havana Year Zero (Habana Año Cero). The novel takes place in the year 1993. Cuba is at the height of the Special Period, a widespread economic crisis following the collapse of the Soviet bloc. For Julia, a mathematics lecturer who hates teaching, this is Year Zero: the lowest possible point. But a way out appears: the search for a missing document that will prove the telephone was invented in Havana by Antonio Meucci. What begins as an investigation into scientific history becomes a tangle of sex, friendship, family legacies, and the intricacies of how people find ways to survive in a country at its lowest ebb.
The author will be interviewed by literary critic Andrea O’Reilly Herrera, followed by a Q&A moderated by poet and essayist Lourdes Gil. This event resumes our Literature Program’s bilingual series on contemporary Cuban and Cuban-American authors, curated by Gil and Herrera.
This special literary event is part of our CreateNYC Language Access Series on Cuban History, Art, and Literature. It will be held in English and Spanish, with English subtitles.
DUE TO THE COVID PANDEMIC, THIS PROGRAM WILL BE STREAMED THROUGH OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL.
