The Cuban Cultural Center of New York is pleased to bestow on Emilio Cueto, the 2023 El Titán Award, our highest recognition for excellence, for his multiple contributions toward promoting and preserving our cultural heritage. He will be honored at a Cultural Gala at the elegant Manhattan Manor, in the heart of New York City, including a cocktail reception, a full-course sit-down dinner, open bar, a musical soiree, and a special award ceremony and film tribute.
Emilio Cueto (b. Havana, 1944) is a Cuban-American attorney, musician, collector and scholar who is based in Washington, D.C. He lived in Cuba until the completion of his high school studies at the Colegio de Belén, coming to the United States through Operation Pedro Pan in 1961. He later earned his J.D. from Fordham University Law School,
his M.A. in Political Science from Columbia University, and his B.A. in Political Science from the Catholic University of America. He also previously worked at the Inter-American Development Bank.
A devoted “Cubanologist”, Emilio holds one of the world’s largest private collections of Cuban memorabilia – internationally known as La Emilioteca – housing unique artefacts such as colonial coins, contemporary paintings, 16th century maps, and even vintage newspapers and books. He is the author of numerous books about Cuba, in both English and Spanish, including Delivering Cuba Through the Mail (2021), Cuba en USA (2018), La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre en el alma del pueblo cubano (2014), Illustrating Cuba’s Flora and Fauna (2002), Cuba in Old Maps (1999), Mialhe’s Colonial Cuba (1994), among many others.
Emilio is a frequent lecturer at the Cuban Cultural Center of New York, Florida International University (including CasaCuba and the Cuban Research Institute), and many other institutions across the world. He has also published articles in periodicals such as Cuban Studies, Diario Las Américas, Espacio Laical, Herencia, El Nuevo Herald, Opus Habana, Palabra Nueva, and Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional José Martí.
The Gala promises to be a memorable evening, where we will celebrate Emilio’s legacy with a special cultural program. Cocktail hour will begin at 7 pm. Sit-down dinner and program will begin at 8pm. The evening will be emceed by PBS anchor, Rafael Pi Roman. Music will be performed by the Juan Ruiz and Camila Cortina Jazz Duet, featuring legendary classics by multiple grammy-winning artist Paquito D’Rivera, Beny Moré, Chucho Valdés, Pedro Flores, and many more!
All event proceeds will go toward continuing our mission of preserving and promoting Cuba’s cultural heritage and fostering new developments in the arts.
