CÍRCULO DE CULTURA PANAMERICANO: A 60 AÑOS DE SU FUNDACIÓN

A special celebratory tribute to Dr. Elio Alba-Buffill In Memoriam (1930-2017) and his wife,
Dr. Esther Sánchez-Grey Alba, for their invaluable work and dedication to the study and promotion of Hispanic culture as directors of Círculo de Cultura Panamericano (CCP) for more than four decades.

Founded 60 years ago in New Jersey by
Dr. Carlos Raggi, the organization began to grow exponentially after Dr. Alba-Buffill took over the helm in 1975, publishing a cultural journal and attracting a wide range of outstanding academicians, artists and intellectuals who gathered periodically to present their work
until the dissolution of CCP in 2017.

The tribute will include testimonials from across the U.S. and abroad in praise of the Albas’s contribution to the preservation and advancement of culture and their overall legacy.

The commemorative panel will include Dr. José López-Isa, president of Bergen Community College; Dr. Octavio de la Suarée, president of the Academia de la Historia de Cuba en el Exilio; and the honoree, Dr. Esther Sánchez-Grey Alba. Testimonials will be given by poet Iraida Iturralde, playwright Iván Acosta, historian Néstor Carbonell, journalist Luis de la Paz, literary critic Mariela Gutiérrez, and researcher and historian Andrés Castellanos.

The panel will be moderated by
Dr. Perla Rozencvaig, Vice-President of the Cuban Cultural Center of New York.

Dr. Elio Alba-Buffill practiced law in Cuba. After being exiled in the United States in 1961, he obtained a Master in Arts, specializing in Spanish and Hispanic American literature, and taught at the City University of New York (CUNY) from 1969 to 1995. He was National Executive Secretary of Círculo de Cultura Panamericano from 1975 until 2015. The author of fifteen books, he was a leading expert in the work of Enrique José Varona. Dr. Alba-Buffill was a member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language.

Dr. Esther Sánchez-Grey Alba is a member of the North American Academy of the Spanish Language. She has a degree in Diplomatic Law and was a professor at Drew University and Montclair State College in New Jersey. She was named “Outstanding Woman” by Temas magazine and was granted the Elena Mederos Award for her cultural contribution as an educator and literary critic. A scholar of Latin American theater, her books include, among others, La mujer en el teatro hispanoamericano (1992) and Modern Cuban Theater (2020). She was in charge of the critical bibliography of the journal Círculo: Revista de Cultura from 1975 until 2017, a position she held alongside its associate director Susana Sánchez -Grey Galtieri
