Our 23rd consecutive annual conference will be dedicated this year to Cuba’s history of exiles and migrations, from colonial times to the present, including 19th century emigré communities in New York City and Tampa, the social changes effected by the exiles in Mexico during the 1930’s and 1940’s, the revolutionary groups exiled during the Batista regime, and the different mass waves from 1959 to the present, culminating with an interactive round table with the audience at large about the present diasporic experience.
The congreso will include illustrated presentations, archival photographs, film clips, and engaging Q&As with the audience, and will be headlined by renowned scholars, journalists, historians, and artists from France, Mexico, Cuba, and the United States, including keynote speaker Romy Sánchez, and featuring José Moya, Salvador Salazar, Adriana Méndez Rodenas, Rafael Rojas, Elaine Acosta, María de los Ángeles Torres, Enrique Patterson, Yoandy Izquierdo Toledo, Iraida Iturralde, Lunes Oña and Dagoberto Valdés, among others. The congreso will be dedicated to the 19th century Cuban poet José María Heredia (1803-1839), whose emblematic life as an exile are forever encapsuled in the verses of his iconic poem Himno del desterrado.
