CUBAN WOMEN: THE ILLS OF EXCLUSION, THE URGENCY TO INCLUDE

Monday, April 7, 2025 at 6 pm

In commemoration of the 102nd anniversary of the First National Women’s Congress, held in Havana from April 1 to April 7, 1923, notable Cuban intellectual and feminist Ileana Fuentes will lead a live round-table discussion to address the historical mis-governance that has resulted from the exclusion of Cuban women from the political discourse and historical narrative of the nation. The panel will discuss the reasons why it is essential for women’s voices to be included and heeded, and their priorities and views taken into account, if Cuba is to return to a democratic system, restore civility among its people, and adopt the rule of law in the future.

Author and journalist Ileana Fuentes, who is coordinator of the collective Cubanas♀︎Solidaridad, will be joined at the round table by art historian and human rights activist Carolina Barrero; historian and author Déborah Gómez; and Magdevilia Hidalgo, founder and director of the Cuba chapter of the Latin American Federation of Rural Women (FLAMUR).

This event is part of our CreateNYC Language Access Series on Cuban History, Art, and Literature. It will be held in Spanish.
